Hike, Breathe, Cast
Winding up the rugged trail behind Smugglers’ Notch, you’ll find a little alpine gem tucked into the mountains, Sterling Pond, Vermont’s highest stocked trout pond. Fun fact, the 250 trout are transported to the pond via a chairlift ride. To check it out, take a short but steady climb, with lots of rock stairs to start. After an hour of hiking you’ll be at the top. There you’ll find stillness, spruce scent, and brook trout disturbing the water surface as they rise for a meal. Bring a rod if you’ve got one (and a license), or just dip your toes and watch the mist lift off the pond like something out of A River Runs Through It. Dress in layers, keep a water bottle close, pack a snack or lunch, and don’t forget to pause. The mountain has a way of speaking when we’re quiet enough to listen.

Tomorrow is the big day! Parade, Fireworks, Food, Fun! Here are a few ways to make the most of your day.
Tucked into a quiet nook of our magical woodland trails lies a realm called the Gnome Village, a whimsical haven where imagination takes root and guests become forest architects. The Gnome Village is a designated area in the woods where guests, young and old, gather to build homes for our pint-sized, mythical mountain residents. Constructed from natural supplies found nearby (think twig and branch framing, bark shingles, pinecone chimneys, and pebble patios), these fairy-sized lodges are built to suit, your vision. There’s gnome wrong way to build a gnome shelter. It’s a lesson in eco-friendly creativity, and the results are as charming as they are biodegradable. Families often return to “check on their gnome,” and some even leave tiny letters in the mailbox provided in hopes of correspondence with their garden dwelling friends.
The Gnome Village is located on top of the hill between the Village Center and the Mountain Bike Park. Follow the paved path between Mountainside Water Park and the Village Lodge, take the staircase to the top, look to the right, gnome way you can miss it.

There’s a moment, standing 4,393 feet above sea level on the summit of Mount Mansfield, where conversation falls away, and the view takes over. But don’t be fooled: the best part of this guided hike isn’t just the panorama stretching from the Adirondacks to the Whites, it’s the trail talk. Our guides are walking encyclopedias of Vermont flora, fauna, and folklore (ask about the Wampahoofus), making every step feel connected to the land beneath your boots. Dress smart (layers, sturdy shoes), hydrate often, and prepare to leave a little piece of your stress below the tree line. Because at the top of Vermont, everything feels a bit more grounded.

At Smuggs, we love celebrating local gems that make our community shine, and Cameron’s Cupboard is one of them. This Vermont family-run business crafts small-batch, gluten-free granola that’s as wholesome as their mission. Inspired by Cameron, a young man with autism, the company creates meaningful work opportunities for individuals with special needs, proving that good food and good values go hand in hand. With flavors like Maple Walnut and Apple Cider Donut, their granola is a delicious reminder of what’s possible when purpose meets passion. You’ll find their products right here at the Smugglers’ Notch Country Store, as well as at a booth at our farmers market on Monday mornings. So, get your yogurt ready because each bite supports something bigger than breakfast. We’re proud to spotlight Cameron’s Cupboard as a partner in community, inclusion, and heart.

ViewsGreetings Smuggs Family!
My name is Matt McCawley, and you’ll be seeing my name pop up more frequently here on The Views from the Notch. This May, after many years of service for numerous departments, I started in a new role in Marketing, as the Content Media Specialist. I’ll be working on bringing Smuggs to life through creative content, and waist-deep resort knowledge. I’m excited to start sharing more updates and helpful info primarily tailored for our in-house guests, but any and all who wish to follow, please by all means, tag along. You can expect a few posts each week featuring:
A little more background on me, I was born in Vermont, raised right here in Jeffersonville, and have been skiing at Smuggs for nearly 40 years. I currently live locally with my wife Kate and our 6 year-old boy/girl twins, Micah and Cassidy, who already share our love for outdoor adventures. You will also almost certainly see those two in future marketing campaigns, as they will work for a mini-Hersey bar and a couple Sour Patch Kids.
Of course, Hugh Johnson, and his unforgettable smile and laugh will be back for winter reporting. I’ll be too busy then anyway, skiing all the places he says are good.
Looking forward to connecting with you all, let’s make the most of our days in the Notch!
Cheers,
Matt McCawley

ViewsWhen the calendar turns to July and the fireflies begin their nightly dances, there’s one place that seems to glow brighter than the rest. Nestled in the heart of Vermont’s Green Mountains, Jeffersonville radiates with small-town soul; authentic, unhurried, and altogether unforgettable. And on the 4th of July, all the townsfolk gather to celebrate independence.
By midmorning, the streets of Jeffersonville brim with anticipation. Flags flutter from porch rails. Children, cheeks streaked with face paint, bounce on their toes beside parents holding iced coffees and patriotic pinwheels.
Then, without warning, the sky screams. The deafening roar of F-22 fighter jets carves a silver arc over the valley, a thunderous tribute from the Vermont Air National Guard that sets spirits soaring before a single scout or veteran takes a step. Cheers rise. The mood lifts. And just like that, the festivities begin.
The town’s beloved parade rolls forward. A slow cadence builds as floats, firetrucks, and community groups come into view. Local businesses dress their entries with streamers and signs. In their trademark fezzes and pint-sized hot rods, the Shriners swirl through the streets like living wind-up toys, turning every corner into a crowd-pleaser. Volunteers hurl candy from open trailers, triggering gleeful sprints from sunscreen-glossed kids who dive and dart like squirrels collecting treasure. Laughter bounces down the sidewalks. Neighbors wave from lawn chairs. Reunions happen over handshakes. There’s a shared rhythm in every high-five and holler.
After the parade the first notes of the National Anthem ring out. People rise. The flag lifts. And for a minute, all you hear is the music and the wind.
From there, the celebration shifts toward Cambridge Elementary School, just a few minutes’ walk away. The Jeffersonville Town Fair welcomes all with the whimsy of small-town magic. Carnival games dot the playground. Craft tents line the field with beeswax candles, lilac scented soaps, summer fresh strawberry preserves, and meticulously fashioned jewelry. Local families drift from vendor to vendor, soaking in the sights and sounds of a community in full bloom. The scent of fried dough wafts through the air, syruped with warm Vermont maple and powdered sugar that melts into fingers and napkins. Local musicians tune their guitars beneath shade trees. Lemonade stands sparkle in the sunlight, and conversation buzzes at every corner.
As twilight falls, the party shifts to Smugglers’ Notch Resort, a natural extension of the celebration and a gathering point for families, friends, and those wise enough to make this place home base for the holiday. The Green Mountain Grillbillies smoker chugs along, sending out tantalizing trails of barbecue smoke. Families enjoy citrus-sparkled beverages, and kettle corn sweetness. Then music takes over the evening, A House On Fire takes the stage, a band whose name suits the energy they bring. Dance circles form. Glowsticks swirl. The green becomes a living canvas of motion and color.
An old-time field cannon fires from the hill, its deep boom rolling through the mountains, a signification that the show is soon to start. All eyes turn to the mountain, where fireworks launch from halfway up Morse, each burst igniting the ridgeline. The show reflects in the eyes of children perched on picnic blankets. It shines off the perspiring 16-ounce Fiddlehead cans and in the shared smiles of people who know they’re exactly where they’re meant to be. Sound ricochets off the forested slopes, deep rumbles and sharp crackles layered with cheers and applause. Fireflies flash above the tall grass, sharing the sky with sparks of red, white, and electric blue. It’s a finale of fireworks and feeling, chaos and beauty, the kind of moment that tattoos itself on memory.
What makes Smuggs special on the 4th isn’t just the access to events, it’s the way everything unfolds right outside your door. Wake up to the scent of pines and the sounds of celebration. Spend the day immersed in tradition, flavor, and sound. Then drift off in a place where the stars still shine bright and the hills hum with summer’s joy. The sky darkens. The music fades. But our love does not. Somewhere in the tall grass, a firefly still blinks.
Saddle up, y’all! It’s line dancing time. The Boyden Valley Barn is fixin’ to show you how they roll with a little bit of country and a little bit of rock ‘n roll on July 2nd. Whether you’re a seasoned two-stepper or just learning the ropes, Better In Boots will guide you through a new 32-count dance that’ll have you “bootin’, scootin’, and boogyin’” in no time. The evening kicks off at 6:00 pm with open dancing and warm-ups, followed by a lesson at 6:15 pm, and then more dancing and speakers going boom boom until 9:00 pm. Got a little dirt on your boots? No problem! Just bring your, here for the party energy and a clean pair of shoes for the dance floor. So grab your partner, or don’t, and join us for a night of I like it, I love it, I want some more of it, laughs and fun. It’s gonna be a honky-tonk good time!

ViewsJune in Vermont is a perfect time to head outside and listen. From early morning walks to quiet afternoon strolls, the woods, meadows, and mountaintops are full of birds singing, flying, and nesting. You don’t have to be an expert to enjoy it; bring your eyes, ears, and a little curiosity. Nature puts on a show, and everyone’s invited. Bright red Scarlet Tanagers, tiny buzzing warblers, swooping hawks, and chirping thrushes are just a few of the birds you might spot. Some, like the blaze orange Baltimore Oriole, can be seen in and around our sugar maple forests. Fun Fact: They LOVE orange or grape jelly. Others, like the Hermit Thrush (Vermont’s State Bird), tend to be shy and secretive, and might act like they’re playing a game of hide and seek with you, darting in and out of cover. Birding is a fun and ageless way to slow down and explore, alone or together. Bring along a pair of binoculars, a notebook to draw what you see, or just enjoy the peaceful sounds all around. Whether you’re visiting Vermont or lucky enough to call it home, birding, especially in June, is a great way to connect with nature, stretch your legs, and make memories that don’t fly away.
Want to start birding? Check out this helpful guide from the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department to get started. While staying in the village, try one of our self-guided hikes. These well-marked and easy-to-follow woodland paths put you right in the bullseye for seeing many different species. Take down simple observations like size, location, what the bird was doing, and its main colors. Use that data later to help make a species identification. For the kids, turn it into a treasure hunt; how many colors can you find in the trees, how many songs can you count, or who can spot a bird building a nest?
When your shadow starts to stretch, and the tree swallows are swooping through the summer breeze, there’s only one place to be: the Backyard BBQ Bash on the Village Green.
Every Tuesday night from 5:00 to 8:00 on the Village Green. No RSVP, no fuss, just show up.
This isn’t your average Tuesday. We kick things off with the sleight-of-hand, but not of humor, wizardry of Marko the Magician. After that, Jammin’ Sam takes over with live acoustic music that sets the tone for a laid-back night. All the while, classic lawn games are out and ready to go. Food and drinks are available for purchase from Morse Mountain Grille, and yes, there’s a full-blown s’mores bar to seal the deal. So, whether you’re chasing kids around the Green, catching up with friends, or just vibing to the tunes with a cold drink in hand, this is your midweek chance to slow down and settle into summer.
Saturday night, June 28, at Boyden Farm, the air warms with the smell of newly mowed grass, char-grilled burgers, piping hot pizza, and fresh pocket pies. Neighbors and friends drift toward the barn, drawn by the pull of music and the promise of a good time. The Phil Abair Band rolls out their set with familiar favorites that will forever bring a smile to your face. One hand’s balancing a maple creemee from Palmer’s, the other’s raising a glass from the bar, because summer nights this good deserve the libations to match. Lights twinkle against the long-lasting June sky as the sun slowly drops low, casting the dance floor in gold and shadows. It’s an evening of simple pleasures, good tunes, great food, and the kind of company that will make you want to party in a barn more often. More info…
Opening June 21st on Mountain Road, Full Send Pizza & Provisions is the delicious creation of locals Billy and Ian. They’re serving up classic, no-frills pizza with serious flavor, starting with a high-hydration, long-fermented dough for that perfect chewy, crispy crust. The homemade sauce and house-made meatballs (from family recipes) are must-tries, and there are over a dozen specialty pies to explore.
But it’s not just pizza—think melty paninis, stacked sandwiches on NYC rolls, fresh salads, VT creemees, and ice-cold take-out drinks. The space has a relaxed mountain-town vibe, complete with live-edge tables and a retro Coca-Cola menu board locals may remember. It’s open Thursday–Monday, 11:30 am – 9:00 pm, with delivery to Smuggs condos—the only delivery in town!

ViewsFarmer’s Markets & Fun on the Horizon
There’s something so quintessential about a farmer’s market in Vermont. This week, under the watchful eyes of hand-painted silo murals, the town of Jeffersonville welcomed the first farmer’s market of the summer season… and the town turned out in force! Neighbors were catching up, sharing plans for the upcoming school vacation. Kids were darting between picnic tables, dust clinging to their bare, sweaty ankles. The scent of wood-fired pizza, kimchi stuffed dumplings, and Canadian wildfire smoke drifted through the hazy June air. The community gathered on blankets and benches, savoring the moment as much as the food. It was sticky. It was sandy. It was perfect.
Our local vendors turned out too—tables bursting with various organic goods, handmade crafts, wildflower bouquets, and sandwiches so good, they’d make you howl. Each booth told a story, and behind every one stood a neighbor: someone you’ve seen at Hanley’s, sat next to on the Sterling lift, or in line at school pick-up. This isn’t just a market—it’s a community gathering.
If you happened to miss the first set, encores will routinely happen 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm every Wednesday from now through the fall—same place, same time. So bring your friends, your families, and your reusable totes. Come hungry. Come curious. Come be part of what makes our little corner of the Notch so incredibly special.
