• Starting tomorrow and through the weekend, the weather looks to be warm and pleasant. If you haven’t done an off-site water activity yet, make your plans today. Bingham Falls hike, Lamoille River float, and the Jeffersonville Gorge hike are excellent, just out of the village options. Otherwise, stay on-site with a jaunt to Rum Runners’, or a shuttle trip down to Bootleggers’ Basin. Just find some fresh Vermont water and dive (feet first jump) in. 

• Grab the $16 smash burger meal deal from the Village Pizzeria for lunch today. The original with a double patty, pickles, cheese, and special sauce is tough to beat. Opens at noon. 

The NSAJA Bob Gillen Award goes to… Hugh Johnson

All of Smugglers’ Notch would like to congratulate Hugh Johnson for winning the Bob Gillen Memorial Award, this award honors an individual corporate member for contributions to the advancement of snowsports, and exemplifies the highest standards of professionalism in public relations and communications. It is named for the late Bob Gillen, former editor of Ski magazine and marketer at Crested Butte and Sugarbush resorts, and a staunch ally of NASJA (North American Snowsports Journalists Association.)

Hugh has been the voice of the mountain for over 25 years, providing daily snow conditions and a local’s perspective through his reports online in the “Views from the Notch.” His dedication includes early mornings to assess conditions firsthand. Coordinating with various mountain operations teams to be in the right place at the right time. Enthusiastically engaging with guests during on-mountain events. Then staying late to create evening posts summing up the day through his words and images while prepping everyone for what tomorrow may hold.

His snow reports have steered me (and thousands of others) to the goods for years, even if he occasionally holds back the true stashes for himself. He’s got a work ethic that won’t quit, a smile that’s even bigger, and somehow still finds time to be a top-shelf family man at the greatest family Resort. I’ve learned a lot from Hugh, especially how to spin less-than-desirable conditions into another beautiful day at Smuggs. Proud to call him a colleague, luckier to call him a friend. Congratulations again, Hugh, and that’s no bull.

NASJA Recognizes Excellence in Snowsports Media and Competition

Bob Gillen Memorial Award: Honoree Hugh Johnson, Smugglers’ Notch Resort’s snow reporter, has provided the daily snow conditions as well as a local’s perspective of the Smuggs world for nearly 30 years, including writing and providing images for the daily “Hugh’s Views” column (now “Views from the Notch”), updating local media, and lending his distinctive voice to both the snow report and on-mountain activities. 

The Gillen recognizes achievements in snowsports public relations and communications. It is named for the late Bob Gillen, former editor of Ski magazine and marketer at Crested Butte and Sugarbush resorts, and a staunch ally of NASJA.

Insider Tip

• Did you know you can get takeout from all our on-site dining locations, including the Hearth & Candle. I know, as a parent, that sometimes you might not want to go out and sit down at a restaurant, but at the same time you don’t want to cook either. Smuggs has this sentiment covered. I had the pork chop from the Hearth the other night and it was superb. 

• Courtside Pool is open until 9:00 pm. A dip in the pool, and a dunk in the hot tub before bed is a lovely way to wind down the day.

• Everything looks better through a fresh pair of sunglasses. Brighten the already stunning scenery with polarized lenses and maybe see that brookie swimming by in Sterling Pond. 3 Mountain Outfitters has a great selection of top brands like Smith, Maui Jim, Oakley, and my personal favorite Blender. 

• Trent’s Bread is delivered on Tuesday. Grab a fresh loaf of Vermont Artisan Bread from The Country Store before they’re gone.

Hike, Breathe, Cast

Winding up the rugged trail behind Smugglers’ Notch, you’ll find a little alpine gem tucked into the mountains, Sterling Pond, Vermont’s highest stocked trout pond. Fun fact, the 250 trout are transported to the pond via a chairlift ride. To check it out, take a short but steady climb, with lots of rock stairs to start. After an hour of hiking you’ll be at the top. There you’ll find stillness, spruce scent, and brook trout disturbing the water surface as they rise for a meal. Bring a rod if you’ve got one (and a license), or just dip your toes and watch the mist lift off the pond like something out of A River Runs Through It. Dress in layers, keep a water bottle close, pack a snack or lunch, and don’t forget to pause. The mountain has a way of speaking when we’re quiet enough to listen.

• Vibes: It’s a “Bouncing Around the Room” kind of morning, light, breezy, mellow. Great for a sunrise stroll, a roll cast on the Brewster River, or an early hike up Morse before the crowd wakes up. But come afternoon, we’re shifting into “Split Open and Melt” territory. Clouds get weird, the air thickens, and the whole scene starts to feel like a slow-building Type II jam, unpredictable and slightly electric.

• Activity: Yoga for All Levels. Ages 13 & older. Nordland Library. Get your stretch on before a long day tomorrow of standing while watching the parade and fireworks.

•  Notchville Water Park is open! Daily 11:00am – 7:00pm. This a hidden gem at Smuggs, with interactive elements that will keep the kids busy, and less crowding because of its off the beaten path location. Free waterfall massages too!

Tomorrow is the big day! Parade, Fireworks, Food, Fun! Here are a few ways to make the most of your day.

• Arrive early for both the parade and the fireworks to claim the best spot.

• Bring your own chair/blanket, thank me later.

• Maple Street in Jeffersonville tends to be less busy than Main Street and provides more shade from the sun. Also, and far more important, Less people = more candy for the kids too.

• Park near the Union Bank for easy access into and out of town. Don’t forget to get your picture with the silo murals.

• Go all out with the Red, White, and Blue. Pinwheels, Flags, Face-paint, Attire.

• Be ready for the fly over, the jets will scream past at exactly 10:02am. They will sneak up on you, but their presence will instantly and definingly be known once they arrive. 

• Glowsticks and fireworks go together like peanut butter and jelly. 

• Embrace freedom and eat without judgment or persecution. Candy for breakfast, yes. Fried Dough for lunch, absolutely. Sauce-soaked BBQ meat for dinner, why stop now? Chase it all down with something frosty and cold, L-I-V-I-N.

Tucked into a quiet nook of our magical woodland trails lies a realm called the Gnome Village, a whimsical haven where imagination takes root and guests become forest architects. The Gnome Village is a designated area in the woods where guests, young and old, gather to build homes for our pint-sized, mythical mountain residents. Constructed from natural supplies found nearby (think twig and branch framing, bark shingles, pinecone chimneys, and pebble patios), these fairy-sized lodges are built to suit, your vision. There’s gnome wrong way to build a gnome shelter. It’s a lesson in eco-friendly creativity, and the results are as charming as they are biodegradable. Families often return to “check on their gnome,” and some even leave tiny letters in the mailbox provided in hopes of correspondence with their garden dwelling friends. 

The Gnome Village is located on top of the hill between the Village Center and the Mountain Bike Park. Follow the paved path between Mountainside Water Park and the Village Lodge, take the staircase to the top, look to the right, gnome way you can miss it.

Our guides are walking encyclopedias of Vermont flora, fauna, and folklore (ask about the Wampahoofus), making every step feel connected to the land beneath your boots. • Saddle up, y’all! It’s line dancing time. The Boyden Valley Barn is fixin’ to show you how they roll with a little bit of country and a little bit of rock ‘n roll on July 2nd. Whether you’re a seasoned two-stepper or just learning the ropes, Better In Boots will guide you through a new 32-count dance that’ll have you “bootin’, scootin’, and boogyin’” in no time. The evening kicks off at 6:00 pm with open dancing and warm-ups, followed by a lesson at 6:15 pm, and then more dancing and speakers going boom boom until 9:00 pm. Got a little dirt on your boots? No problem! Just bring your, here for the party energy and a clean pair of shoes for the dance floor. So grab your partner, or don’t, and join us for a night of I like it, I love it, I want some more of it, laughs and fun. It’s gonna be a honky-tonk good time!
