  1. Renal cell carcinoma is the most common of the tumours of the kidney in adults, accounting for 70% of all renal tumours, and 85% of renal cancers. Benign tumours of the kidney are rare. Renal cell carcinomas arise from the proximal tubule cells. Its old name of hypernephroma reflects that it was believed to arise from the adrenal gland.

This tumor is also known as adenocarcinomas as they arise from tubular epithilium.Tobacco is the most significant rick factor,,hypertension, obesity, unopposed estrogen therapy and exposure to asbestos, petroleum products and heavy metals are the other causes. There are four types of renal cell carcinoma- clear cell carcinoma, pappilary carcinoma, chromophobic renal carcinoma, collecting duct (bellini duct) carcinoma.
